Backlot

Open source · macOS & Linux

A private film studio that runs on your machine.

Backlot takes you from script to screen. Write the script, lay out the storyboard, then generate every frame and take with the AI models you choose. Your projects and renders stay on your computer.

The Backlot storyboard: six frames of a trailer, each with its shot size, camera move and lens, joined by cuts and dissolves.

The storyboard. Each frame carries its shot, camera move and lens; the script and the board stay in sync.

Private by default

No Backlot account, no Backlot server, no telemetry. Everything you make is stored on your computer until you export it.

Script to screen

Write the script, break it into frames, generate takes from several models, and compare them side by side before you pick one.

Open, and yours

Apache 2.0 open source. Bring your own Venice.ai API key; Backlot shows you the cost first.

The Backlot script view: numbered frames with scene headings, action, dialogue and transitions.

Write it like a script

Scene headings, action, dialogue and transitions, in a format any film crew can read. Every line belongs to a frame, so the script becomes the shot list.

From the Backlot crew

This Christmas, the slop is free.

In the heartland, one farmer found a new kind of feed. A FACES picture: a one-minute trailer and a three-minute music video, “Keep On Sloppin’ in the Free World.” Every shot was generated with AI video models. The song is ours.

Early days

Backlot is in active development. There is no installer yet: build it from source on macOS or Linux. The production workflow (script, storyboard, takes) works today. Quick generation and a post-production timeline come next.
